The city, Coorg is also known as Kodagu. Coorg was originally named Kodaimalenadu, meaning ‘dense forest on a steep hill’. This is one of the famous tourist destinations in Karnataka. It is also known as ‘Scotland of India’ or ‘Kashmir of Karnataka’ due to the similarities in its climate, nature, geography, atmosphere, water bodies and more with Kashmir and Scotland. Coorg is located in the south-western part of Karnataka in the Malnad space of Western Ghats. This rocky area covers about 4,102 sq. km and is majorly a hilly region that lies at a height ranging from 900 m to 1715 m above the sea level.
Tourism in Coorg
Madikeri a taluka in Kodau district is a notable place for sightseers in Karnataka. It is 252 kms away from Bangalore and and also known as Mercara. It has beautiful mountains with lush green which will be mesmerizing for the viewers. The river Cauvery (Kaveri) which is the largest river in Karnataka originates at Talakaveri on the Brahmagiri range in the Western ghats. Madikeri gives a restoring feel to the individuals who visit this spot, consequently drawing in a ton of sightseers. The other tourist spots are Abbey Falls, Iruppu Falls, Mallalli Falls, Madikeri Fort, Madikeri Palace and Raja's Seat.

Coorg is the largest producer of coffee in Karnataka, it is also famous for Coorg spices like Pepper, Cardamom, Cumin, Bay leaves, Garlic, Rosemary, etc. It is also famous for dry fruits like Cashews, Raisins and Figs. Coorg is well known for their home-made wine which is basically produced by fermenting fruits. The most famous wine is grape wine, we have wide variety of wines available.

- Wine prices in Coorg range from Rs. 150 to 200 while the same product in other metropolitan cities ranges from 500 to 1500 depending on the age, type of wine, origin and many more.
- Spices like pepper are grown extensively in Coorg and the price of pepper is about Rs. 450 to 1200 per kg while in metropolitan cities the cost is about Rs. 800 to 2500 per kg depending on the quality.
- Coorg is the largest producer of coffee for Karnataka, and price of coffee is about Rs 250 to 500 per kg, while in Jaipur the cost is about Rs.350 to 800 per kg depending on the quality.
Cultural heritage of Coorg
Coorg is famous for its unique traditions of celebrating festivals. Most of the Coorg population originally belongs to the tribal communities called Kodava and Gowda. They are well known for their bravery and hospitality. They celebrate many festivals like Huttari, Keil podu and Carvery Makara Sankranti.

- General K S Thimayya was the general and chief of Indian army and also he secured Ladakh for India during Kashmir war in 1948.
