How to Choose the Right MBA College
After looking at all the rankings, fees, and placement data, the question that really matters is: which college is right for you?
First, define your goal. If you want to enter investment banking, IIM Calcutta and IIM Bangalore are natural targets. If you want to lead HR at a large corporation, XLRI makes more sense than IIM-A. If you want to pivot into consulting with 4 years of work experience, ISB Hyderabad deserves serious consideration.
Second, be honest about your CAT score. If you're scoring in the 90–94 percentile range, targeting only IIM-A is setting yourself up for disappointment. Cast a wider net — IIM Kozhikode, IIM Tiruchirappalli, MDI Gurgaon, and SPJIMR are all excellent institutions.
Third, factor in the total cost of attendance, not just fees. Hostel, mess, books, travel, and exam fees can add ₹2–5 lakh to your total expense. FMS Delhi looks even more attractive when you account for this.
Fourth, look at the alumni network in your target city. If you want to work in Mumbai, schools with strong Mumbai alumni networks (SPJIMR, NMIMS, Great Lakes) will serve you better than a college with no presence in the city.
